Art of the Ancient Mediterranean
World
Brigham Young University Museum of Art
Christina and Anna attending the art exhibit
When the Brigham Young University Museum of Art
(in Provo, Utah) recently received the privledge of holding the art exhibit
"Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World: Egypt, Greece, Rome," members
of the Shoshone EdTech Quest team decided to tour the museum. The art pieces-
ranging from statues and vases to tombs, came from the Museum of Fine Arts in
Boston. The 204 works displayed are part of what is considered the most distinguished
collection of ancient Mediterranean world works in the United States.
Though the exhibit shows a variety of artwork
from Egypt and Rome, it also shows a great deal about the Greek culture. Among
the artwork of ancient Greece there are a neat handleless
vase, a
core-formed glass, and a perfume
container. Artwork can often tell stories and information about the
people who made them, and this exhibit shows that.
Also, when one goes on a tour of the museum, the
artwork is in chronological order, showing how artwork evolved over the centuries
and within cultures. Informational videos are also placed throughout the museum,
and they tell more about history behind the artpieces. The information is very
fascinating, especially for someone who's studied about any of those ancient
groups.
This exhibit is amazing and beautiful to behold.
It shows the beauty, grace, and classical views of the Greek people, as well
as many charcteristics of other cultures. If anyone else is interested in attended
this exhibit, it will be at the BYU-Utah Museum of Art for a limited time. Starting
on June 3, 2004, and ending on June 4, 2005, the exhibit costs $5 for adults,
$4 for seniors, and $3 for children. The museum is located on North Campus Drive,
on the BYU campus in Provo, Utah. This is one exhibit that history fans will
not want to miss.
